Staircase lighting is more than just an accessory – it shapes how you move between floors, enhances safety, and highlights architectural details. There are three main types: wall lights, recessed spotlights, and compact pendant lights. Each suits specific needs for ceiling height, width of passage, and brightness. A straight staircase 90 cm wide needs a light output of at least 300 to 500 lumens per linear metre for safety, while a spiral staircase may need focused lighting to avoid shadows. Wall lights: Perfect for staircases with solid walls, they are fitted 90–110 cm above the floor to guide the way without glare. Choose 3–7 W LED per fitting, spaced every 1.5 to 2 metres. Glass models give a soft glow, while metal options direct the light down to highlight each step.

Recessed spotlights: Ideal for modern or minimalist stairs, these integrate into risers or side walls. A 2–4 W LED spot, 200–350 lumens, every 80–100 cm is enough for safe movement. IP44-rated fittings are recommended if the stairs are close to an entrance exposed to humidity.

Pendant lights: For large stairwells or spaces with skylights, a compact pendant (20–30 cm diameter, height adjustable up to 120 cm) creates a focal point without blocking the way. Opt for 2700–3000 K for a cosy feel or 4000 K for a more neutral look.

How to choose the right brightness and installation height for staircase lighting?

The brightness you need depends on the size of the staircase and wall colour. For a 4–6 m² staircase, allow for 400–800 lumens across several fittings. Light walls reflect brightness, so you may need less power, whereas dark walls will require brighter lighting. Ideally, wall lights are installed 90 cm from the step edge, and recessed spots 15–20 cm above each tread to avoid glare. For pendants, allow at least 210 cm clear headroom for safe access, especially in busy staircases.

For winder or spiral stairs, use multiple light points to prevent shadows. A dimmable staircase light lets you adjust brightness for different times of day or night-time use.

What styles and materials are best for staircase lighting?

Designer lighting: Clean lines and finishes in brushed brass or matte black are ideal for contemporary stairs. Lights in opal glass or perforated metal cast an even glow and prevent harsh shadows.

Wood lighting: For an oak or beech staircase, a wooden fitting adds warmth and visual continuity. Choose wall or pendant lights in solid, moisture-treated wood with an oiled or varnished finish for easy care.

LED lighting: Essential for heavy use, offering 25,000–50,000 hours of life and low energy. Motion sensor models are great for stairs, as they turn off automatically for safety and convenience.

For easy care, pick staircase lighting with smooth, accessible surfaces, especially for high-traffic areas. Dust monthly and use a damp sponge to keep glass or metal clear. Avoid porous or matte finishes for outdoor stairs, as these show dirt more easily.
