Ball bedside lamps : faites le bon choix

The ball bedside lamp is the lighting accent that structures the bedroom space without ever feeling heavy.

With its spherical silhouette—both graphic and soft—the ball bedside lamp is perfect for setting the mood in your bedroom with gentle, controlled light. Its compact size, usually between 12 and 25 cm in diameter, makes it easy to place on a narrow bedside table or a windowsill. The ball bedside lamp provides uniform illumination with no dark spots, making it ideal for reading or creating a cosy atmosphere. Its reassuring round shape works equally well in adults’ and children's bedrooms, and helps to reduce bumps and knocks. Most models take E14 or E27 LED bulbs, with a recommended power of 3 to 7 watts (about 250–600 lumens)—just the right amount for soft accent lighting that won't dazzle.

Which materials work best for a ball bedside lamp?

Opal glass: An opal glass ball bedside lamp gives a soft, even light, perfect for an enveloping glow. Frosted glass prevents glare and looks great with warm white bulbs (2700–3000 K). For bedrooms, a diameter of 15–20 cm offers the best balance between visual presence and subtlety.

Glazed ceramic: Ceramic models, often found in white, black or pastel shades, add an artisanal touch and extra stability due to their weight. Ceramic allows for matte or glossy finishes, so you can match your lamp to your décor. A base diameter of 10–12 cm gives solid stability on a bedside table.

Lacquered metal: For a modern look, a ball bedside lamp in lacquered metal (steel or aluminium) offers shine and durability, fitting perfectly into contemporary or industrial interiors. Be mindful of heat—always opt for LED bulbs to keep the globe cool.

Some lamps combine materials, such as a glass shade on a brass or wooden base, for interesting textural contrasts. To see more spherical designs, the ball lighting collection features options for every room.

How to choose the right brightness and colour temperature

Your ball bedside lamp should be bright enough for reading without straining your eyes, while maintaining a calming atmosphere. For a standard bedside table (50–65 cm high), a 3–5 W LED bulb (300–450 lumens) works well for ambient lighting. For reading, you can go up to 7 W (600 lumens), but avoid exceeding 800 lumens to help support sleep.

The ideal colour temperature is 2700–3000 Kelvin for warm, relaxing light. Dimmable models let you adjust brightness throughout the day. For children’s bedrooms, opt for a soft light, flicker-free LED bulb and a shatterproof globe.

If you want touch controls or dimming, the touch bedside lamp is a practical, modern option that keeps the spherical style.

Which styles and looks suit a ball bedside lamp?

Scandi style: Choose a ball bedside lamp in frosted glass or white ceramic, paired with natural materials such as light wood. A diameter of around 15 cm keeps the look light and airy. For a perfect match, pair it with a Scandi bedside lamp or linen and oak accessories.

Vintage vibe: Brass, smoked glass or colourful ceramic models are reminiscent of the 1970s. A globe with an 18–22 cm diameter on a gold or matte black base works beautifully in a retro-inspired bedroom. To complete the look, discover the vintage bedside lamps range.

Contemporary minimalism: Go for a simple ball bedside lamp in black or white lacquered metal, with a discrete switch. A 12–16 cm diameter creates a graphic feature without clutter. This style fits best with light-coloured walls and minimalist furniture.

For a sculptural effect, pair a ball bedside lamp with a matching ball floor lamp to play with proportions and repetition.

For maintenance, simply dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth—especially for glass or metal globes. Avoid abrasive cleaners, which might damage the finish. For ceramic bases, clean with plain water.

With its timeless shape and wide variety of styles, the ball bedside lamp adapts to every décor and room size, providing comfortable and precise lighting wherever you use it.
