Coloured spotlights : faites le bon choix

A coloured spotlight is the vibrant accent that shapes a space without ever overwhelming the room.

Coloured spotlights are the perfect solution to add rhythm to a contemporary interior or refresh a more classic look. Compact and adjustable, they work just as well as ceiling downlights or wall spotlights, either solo or in a series, letting you control the lighting to suit your needs. Sizes range from 6 to 15 cm in diameter, with shallow recessed depths from just 4 cm for the most discreet models. The variety of available colours invites you to create bold contrasts or fine-tune tonal harmony, from deep blue to sunny yellow, olive green or brick red. Most coloured spotlights feature LED technology with 5 to 12 W of power, providing a light output of 400 to 1,100 lumens—ideal for lighting worktops, hallways or reading areas without glare. Colour temperature ranges from 2,700K (warm white) to 4,000K (neutral white) to suit every mood.

Which coloured spotlights should you choose for each room?

Recessed spotlights: Perfect for low ceilings or suspended ceilings, they offer a flush finish and even light distribution. Choose a diameter of 8 to 10 cm for rooms of 10 to 15 m², spaced 1.5 m apart for uniform lighting with no dark patches. IP44 models are recommended for bathrooms or kitchens.

Adjustable spotlights: Ideal for highlighting a picture, bookcase or reading corner. The adjustable beam angle (30° to 90°) allows precise target lighting. In living rooms, fit several coloured spotlights on a track to adapt the ambiance throughout the day.

Wall-mounted spotlights: Fixed to the wall, these provide accent lighting or can be used as reading lights by the bed. For comfort, install between 120 and 150 cm above the floor.

For kitchen use, opt for coloured spotlights with a colour rendering index (CRI) above 80 to show food and materials accurately. Aim for 600 to 800 lumens per spotlight above work surfaces.

Multiply the light sources in living rooms: a blue or green coloured spotlight can highlight an alcove or textured wall, while yellow or orange models create a warmer feel in relaxation areas. In bedrooms, choose soft shades (dusty pink, water green) with a 2,700K colour temperature to support relaxation.

How many coloured spotlights and what power do you need?

The right number depends on the area to light and desired effect. For general lighting, allow 300 to 400 lumens per m². In a 12 m² room, plan for 4 or 5 coloured spotlights of 8 W each (about 800 lumens) for balanced results. In a 5 m long hallway, three coloured spotlights spaced 1.5 to 2 m apart will suffice.

For bathrooms, favour at least IP44 models and ensure they’re installed at least 60 cm from water points. For a softer mood, choose dimmable coloured spotlights compatible with dimmer switches, so you can adjust the intensity as needed.

The mounting height affects the effect: from a standard ceiling (2.5 m), a coloured spotlight casts a light cone roughly 1.5 m in diameter on the floor. For visual impact, alternate colours along the same track or line, keeping regular gaps.

For a minimalist look, combine coloured spotlights with design spotlights in matte or satin finishes for refined style.

How to integrate coloured spotlights into your décor?

Coloured spotlights pair easily with other lights to zone a space. In predominantly white or grey rooms, a blue or green spotlight creates a focal point without weighing down the décor. For a cosy feel, combine them with wooden spotlights or natural materials for textured contrast.

In kitchens or bathrooms, coloured spotlights can supplement main lighting and accentuate splashbacks or mirrors. For track installations, ensure models are voltage-compatible (230V or 12V) and match colour temperatures for a seamless look.

For a graphic effect, alternate vibrant and neutral shades, coordinating with accessories or furniture. Red or yellow coloured spotlights energise a workspace, while pastels create a soothing feel for children's bedrooms.

For a technical install, check compatibility with LED spotlights for low energy use and a lifespan over 25,000 hours.

For a complete lighting project, explore the spotlight collection for even more effects and perfectly tailored lighting.
