Mushroom bedside lamps : faites le bon choix

The mushroom bedside lamp is the sculptural accent that transforms any nightstand into a style statement.

Defined by its rounded silhouette, domed shade and compact base, the mushroom bedside lamp evokes the iconic design of the 1970s. Made from blown glass, lacquered metal or ABS plastic, these lamps are available in heights from 20 to 35 cm to suit any bedside table. Their enveloping shape diffuses a soft glow, perfect for reading or creating a cosy atmosphere. Far from just a retro piece, the mushroom bedside lamp works equally well in contemporary, vintage or Scandinavian interiors, with matt, glossy or translucent finishes.

What materials and finishes are available for mushroom bedside lamps?

Opal glass: Opal glass, 3 to 5 mm thick, ensures even light distribution and increased resistance to thermal shock. It is ideal for both adult and children's bedrooms, preventing glare. Models in white or coloured opal glass (blue, green, amber) produce a warm light between 2700 and 3000K.

Lacquered metal: Lacquered metal versions, finished with tough epoxy paint, offer bold colours such as black, orange or gold and are easy to care for—a simple microfibre cloth will keep them shining. These mushroom bedside lamps commonly use LED E14 or E27 bulbs, with 4 to 7W (400 to 700 lumens) recommended for optimal bedside lighting.

ABS plastic: Lightweight and shatterproof, ABS plastic allows for more playful shapes and vibrant colours. Perfect for children's rooms or modern interiors, ABS models are usually more compact (height 18 to 25 cm) and easy to clean with soapy water.

For a touch responsive option, the touch bedside lamp sometimes adopts the mushroom design, offering a built-in dimmer and on/off control by a simple tap.

What size and brightness should you choose for a mushroom bedside lamp?

The ideal brightness depends on its use: for reading, choose a mushroom bedside lamp with a 5 to 7W LED bulb (500 to 700 lumens) and a warm white (2700 to 3000K). For mood lighting, 3 to 4W is sufficient. The ideal height is between 25 and 35 cm for a standard nightstand (45 to 60 cm high), ensuring the light source sits below eye level and avoids glare.

The lampshade diameter ranges from 18 to 28 cm: a small model (18–20 cm) is perfect for narrow tables or children's bedrooms, while a larger one (25–28 cm) makes a statement in a master bedroom or on a chest of drawers. For visual harmony, make sure your mushroom bedside lamp does not exceed a third of your nightstand's width.

In a retro-inspired bedroom, pairing a mushroom bedside lamp with a vintage lamp on a dresser creates a stylish graphic echo.

How can you style the mushroom bedside lamp in your decor?

The mushroom bedside lamp complements a variety of looks. In white or opal finishes, it fits effortlessly into minimalist or Scandinavian bedrooms. Coloured options (orange, green, blue) energise a neutral scheme or work with graphic textiles. For a gallery effect, place two mushroom bedside lamps of different sizes on a console or wall shelf.

For children's rooms, choose ABS plastic or thick glass models for added durability. For a sophisticated vibe, a gold or black mushroom bedside lamp brings a premium touch, especially when combined with brass accessories or a designer mirror.

To vary your lighting, team the mushroom bedside lamp with a LED bedside lamp for adjustable brightness throughout the day.

And if you'd like to explore more organic shapes, the mushroom table lamp is also available as a living room or desk light, up to 45 cm high and with outputs up to 12W.
