Rope lampshades : faites le bon choix

The natural light of a rope lampshade captures the refined simplicity of a craftsman's workshop.

A rope lampshade is a distinct choice for anyone seeking a warm, textured, natural feel. Made from twisted plant fibres—jute, hemp, or thick cotton—it is available as a pendant, floor lamp or wall light, from compact 18 cm cylinders to large 45 cm cones. The open weave softly diffuses light, ideal for creating a gentle atmosphere without glare. Rope lampshades suit both bohemian interiors and contemporary homes seeking authentic materials.

Which rope types are best for lampshades?

Natural jute: Jute brings a golden beige shade and an irregular texture. A 30 cm rope lampshade in jute weighs about 400 g and works with bulbs up to 40 W. The thick fibre gently filters light, making it perfect for a reading nook or bedroom.

Braided cotton: Softer to the touch, cotton enables finer, more regular weaves. A 25 cm tall cotton rope shade provides even illumination, excellent for a central pendant light in the dining room. Cotton can handle colour temperatures from 2700 to 4000 K without fading.

Hemp: Rustic and tough, hemp stands out for its strength and humidity resistance. A 35 cm hemp rope shade pairs well with LED bulbs up to 60 W and is suited for busy spaces. Its dense fibre absorbs less dust, offering easy maintenance.

For a cohesive look, pair a rope lampshade with a rope floor lamp to play with scale and height in the same space.

What size and wattage for each room?

The size and height of a rope lampshade should match the area to light and the purpose. Next to a bed, choose a small model (18–25 cm diameter), hung 40–50 cm above your reading area, with a 5–8 W bulb (400–600 lumens). For a central pendant in a 20 m² living room, a 40 cm rope shade, suspended 80 cm above the coffee table, gives an enveloping glow with a 12–15 W LED bulb (1000–1200 lumens).

In a dining room, the ideal drop is 70–90 cm above the table, avoiding glare and highlighting the rope's texture. For a graphic look, cluster several small shades (20–25 cm diameter) spaced 30 cm apart to customise the brightness to your needs.

For a unified style, match a rope lampshade with a rope pendant light in the same space to enhance the natural, hand-crafted effect.

How to care for and style a rope lampshade?

Caring for a rope lampshade is easy: dust regularly with a soft brush or vacuum with a gentle nozzle. For stains, gently dab with a slightly damp cloth—do not rub, to keep fibres taut. Avoid prolonged humidity, especially for jute or cotton models.

Rope lampshades pair beautifully with raw materials such as light wood, linen or matt ceramic. They suit Scandinavian, bohemian or coastal interiors. For contrast, combine a rope lampshade with a rattan lampshade or a straw lampshade to vary textures within a natural palette.

In a hallway or entrance, a series of small rope lampshades (15–20 cm) spaced evenly will create rhythm without overloading the space. For a more sophisticated look, opt for a rope light fitting featuring metal detailing or black accents.

In summary, rope lampshades combine raw style and practicality, with a choice of shapes and wattages to suit any setting. This living material changes with time, giving every room a unique, carefully filtered light.
