Small lamp shades : faites le bon choix

A small lamp shade is the perfect detail to transform light into a refined accent.

Small lamp shades are an ideal choice for adjusting your lighting without overwhelming the space. With a typical diameter between 10 and 22 cm, they are perfect for bedside lamps, reading lights, compact table lamps or minimalist pendant lights. Their main purpose is to channel the light, reduce glare and create a focused ambience, all while staying discreet. Their compact format is great for dressing a reading corner, nightstand or side desk, where a standard shade would feel out of place. Choosing the right small lamp shade depends on the fitting (E14 or E27), the height of your lamp and the effect you want to achieve. A shade measuring 12 cm high by 15 cm wide softly diffuses light, perfect for a 4 to 7 W LED bulb (400 to 700 lumens), ideal for bedrooms or reading nooks.

The best materials for a small lamp shade

Fabric lamp shades: Fabric is the most versatile choice for a small lamp shade. Cotton, linen or polyester all provide a soft, even glow. Thick cotton (180 g/m²) filters the light for a cosy feel, while lighter linen lets in more brightness. Some fabric shades can be dry cleaned, making maintenance easier. For bedrooms, go for light-coloured fabric to maximise the glow.

Paper lamp shades: Lightweight and affordable, paper is ideal for small lamp shades on accent lamps or decorative pendants. It gives off a very soft light but is more sensitive to humidity and heat. Japanese paper at 80 g/m², for instance, gives a delicate, graphic look. For more inspiration, see the paper lamp shade collection.

Rattan lamp shades: Handwoven rattan brings a natural, artisanal feel. A small rattan shade (15 cm diameter, 12 cm high) casts beautiful graphic patterns, perfect for a boho or Scandinavian style. Easy to care for with a dry cloth. For a warm look, the rattan lamp shade collection includes models for smaller lamps.

Metal lamp shades: Less common in small sizes, metal (aluminium, brass) directs the light precisely, making it ideal for a desk or reading light. A 10 cm diameter model focuses the beam, ideal for a 3 to 5 W LED bulb. Mind the heat – always use low energy LED bulbs.

How to choose the size and shape of a small lamp shade

The right shade depends on both your lamp and your room. For a bedside lamp, a shade of 12 to 16 cm diameter suits a base 25–35 cm high. On a pendant, a conical 18 cm shade fits well in narrow halls or entrances. The general rule: the shade should be about half the height of the lamp for a balanced look. For a reading lamp, pick a cylindrical shade of 10–14 cm diameter to direct light downwards without glare. Oval or rectangular shades are perfect for tight spots like shelves or window ledges.

For table lamps, make sure the shade fits your lamp holder – most small lamp shades use E14 fittings, sometimes E27. Always check the top opening (usually 4–6 cm) for secure installation. If you need one for your bedside lamp, the bedside lamp shade collection features models just for that purpose.

Styles and colours for small lamp shades

White lamp shades: Timeless and versatile, white shades diffuse light generously and suit all interiors. A small white lamp shade (14 cm diameter) on a bedside lamp creates a soothing, bright atmosphere. To explore more finishes, discover the white lamp shade collection.

Black lamp shades: Bolder and more dramatic, black focuses the light downwards and creates strong contrast. A black shade (12 cm diameter) is great for a desk or side table, paired with a 2700 K LED bulb for warm light. Matte or satin finishes elevate the modern look.

Original lamp shades: Smaller formats are perfect for bold patterns, laser cut designs or vivid colours. A small patterned shade (15 cm diameter) enlivens a child’s room or reading nook. For unique designs, the original lamp shade collection showcases standout pieces.

In summary, the small lamp shade stands out by fitting into even the most compact spaces while offering a choice of materials, shapes and styles. The ideal design depends on the room, the amount of light you want and your decor goals. The right size enhances your lamp’s effect and lights up your space – without ever taking over.
