To add a warm, natural and elegant touch to your home, choose a paper light fitting. Perfect for the living room or bedroom, it provides a gentle glow and creates a calming atmosphere. Whether you’re looking for a pendant light, table lamp or lampshade, each piece will enhance your décor beautifully.

Paper lights : faites le bon choix

Paper lighting offers the delicate beauty of a floating sheet while perfectly illuminating your space.

Paper lights are a stylish decorative choice, bringing a light and airy touch to interiors without overpowering the room. Crafted from natural fibres or technical papers, they are available as pendant lights, ceiling lights, and table lamps, using translucency to cast a soft, even glow. Sizes range from classic globes (30 to 60 cm diameter), ideal for bedrooms or living rooms, up to extra-large designs over a metre wide for spacious areas. Paper weight—typically between 80 and 160 gsm—affects the quality of light: the finer the paper, the more diffused and enveloping the illumination. Some designs feature bamboo or metal frames for added stability, yet always maintain the visual lightness that defines paper lights.

Which type of paper light to choose for your desired effect?

Pendant lights: Paper pendant lights remain the most popular option, best installed 210 cm above the floor, centred over a table or in the middle of a room. For dining rooms of 15 to 20 m², choose a 50 to 60 cm diameter. Washi or rice paper models give off a warm white light (2700 to 3000 K), perfect for cosy atmospheres. Many are compatible with LED bulbs up to 15 W (about 1200 lumens), enough for main lighting.

Ceiling lights: Paper ceiling lights suit rooms with low ceilings or spaces where you want gentle, non-dazzling light. A 40 cm diameter is perfect for bedrooms of 10 to 12 m². Pleated or textured papers create beautiful play of shade and pattern, and installation is easy thanks to lightweight fittings. For material harmony in Scandi or natural decor, pair with wooden ceiling lights.

Lampshades: Paper lampshades, often used for table or floor lamps, provide a gentle glow that’s ideal for reading or ambient lighting. Cylinder or cone shapes (20 to 35 cm tall) fit standard lamp bases. For safety, fire-retardant paper is recommended, especially with halogen or incandescent bulbs.

What size and brightness for each room?

The right paper light depends on the space and its use. For a 20 m² living room, a 60 cm paper pendant with a 15 to 20 W LED bulb (1500 to 1800 lumens) will bring comfortable overall lighting. In a bedroom, a 40 cm model with an 8 to 10 W bulb (800 to 1000 lumens) is perfect for a soothing atmosphere. Hallways or entrances benefit from a compact paper ceiling light (30 to 35 cm) with a 6 to 8 W bulb. Stick to a warm colour temperature (2700 to 3000 K) to keep the light soft. For natural material harmony, explore bamboo pendants for a subtle mix & match effect.

In bathrooms and other damp rooms, paper lights are not recommended due to their sensitivity to humidity. Choose models with a minimum IP44 rating for safety. For children's rooms, look for paper lights free from harmful substances and easy to dust. Patterned or colourful designs add a fun touch while keeping things light and safe. For a child’s bedroom, a 35 to 40 cm diameter paired with a 6 to 8 W LED bulb is ideal.

How to care for and style a paper light?

Paper lights need gentle care: dust regularly with an anti-static duster or dry cloth. Avoid water or cleaning products, which may warp or stain the paper. For removable designs, take out the frame to clean each part separately. In case of marks, dab gently with a white eraser or a barely damp cloth—do not rub.

Paper lights are a perfect match for minimalist, Scandinavian, or Japanese interiors. They pair beautifully with Scandi-style lights, pale wood accessories, or natural textiles. For a cosier feel, combine with fabric lights or soft rugs. In a modern living room, contrast with metal or glass pieces for subtle texture.

Personalise your atmosphere with a mix of shapes—globes, origami, lanterns, or geometric structures. Some designs feature laser-cut patterns that cast striking shadows on the wall. For an original effect, cluster several paper lights of different sizes together, leaving 30 to 50 cm between each pendant to avoid a crowded look.

Lightweight and softly diffusing, paper lights are the go-to choice for anyone seeking gentle, versatile, and decorative lighting.
